As a trademark in the United States, Stillman & Birn has decades of experience in art supplies. The original company was founded in 1958 by Philip Birn (1911-2004). Birn was a very admired Viennese bookbinder who developed its ancient craftsmanship in a small company in SoHo (Manhattan). SoHo is now filled with trendy shops, restaurants and residential lofts, but in the 1950s, SoHo was the center of light industry. Philip Birn was the first to develop the concept of black-bound sketchbooks. The management team of today's Stillman & Birn organization follows the commitment of its founder. It focuses on uncompromising quality and the development of new sketchbook forms to react to the changing needs of artists.
